The Gulf Hypoxia and Local Water Quality Concerns workshop was held September 26-28, 2005 in the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus.

The goals of this event:
  • Increase interstate organization, cooperation, synergism and consistency
  • Gather together available knowledge to assess tools and possible solutions to agricultural nutrient loss water quality problems
  • Educate and communicate with each other on issues and needs
  • Inform implementation agencies and policymakers on the science of nutrient loss reduction
  • Identify further information/research needs
  • Lay the groundwork for the future planning, policy and programs
General topics:
  • Nutrient fate and transport
  • Possible practices and system to implement
  • Consensus on "best" current approaches
  • Innovative and emerging approaches
  • Watershed engineering, targeting, and design
  • Evaluation and assessment methonds (monitoring and/or modeling)
  • Soil resource sustainability
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Missing information
The program included 15 sessions, each session focusing on a specific question or topic. For each topic, a panel of experts prepared a short, preliminary paper addressing the topic. These were provided to all workshop attendees.

Following the workshop the preliminary papers were revised to reflect input from the workshop participants and panelists. The final report is available under the Proceedings menu item.
